Sex and religion: atheists enjoy more

Religion

has never been quite right with sex. This is consistent with the sex of believers are less satisfactory than those of people who consider themselves atheists or agnostics. Or at least this is what the study reveals American social psychologist Darrell Ray (born in Kansas in 1950), called Sex and Secularism. In their study he started from their own personal experiences being raised in a church cristina linked to family and compared with 14,500 interviews with people aged between 25 and 30 years.

The results were evident. The guilt was almost double for believers than for the group of nonbelievers. As for religions, practitioners of religions with the highest moral values obtained an average of 8.9 out of 10 in guilt. By contrast, atheists and agnostics scored just 4.71 for the former and 4.81 for the latter. The Christian religion got a score of 6.34. This decrease blames religious evolution of new generations who do not follow both the letter what he preaches religion.

For those who do not have clear the difference between the atheist and the agnostic, it is that atheists deny the existence of God or a god or higher being. However agnostics, do not deny the existence of God, but they believe it is inaccessible to human understanding.

Let’s go back to sex. This feeling of guilt, however, is not enough to not have sex, all that happens is “only makes them feel bad,” according to the words of the author of the study. What happens is that after performing the “impure” sexual acts, this leads them to ask God’s forgiveness for the sin committed. And so, unfortunately, they fix a lot of things …

The ranking of religions more negative connotation of sex is led Mormons, followed by Jehovah’s Witnesses and petecostales. The Catholic religion occupies half of the table, studied 24 Catholics remained in 11th position.

Masturbation, more satisfying among nonbelievers

Masturbation was also analyzed in the study. In this sense, 22.5% of respondents admitted their embarrassment for masturbating when it came to people raised in very religious households and only 5.5% have that feeling in nonreligious homes. Like everything else, early sexual education is essential to get rid of guilt in adulthood.

People who left their religious beliefs admitted that their sex life had improved, or at least the perception of it, rising more than 1 point their satisfaction after abandoning religion. Women were the ones that improved more than men when rid of the negative prejudices of their sexual activity after losing faith.

Criticisms of the study

The study has some scientific by ideological bias and simplistic and reductionist character, in addition to the methodology used to collect data (questionnaires sent by e-mail) criticism. The sample therefore was not performed with good reliability because only would answer people who identify with these facts. However, the data reflect a reality that seems evident in today’s society, that even seems to evolve towards a less religious society no doubt been influenced by religion in performing certain behaviors, not just sexual.

Darrel Ray, is author of The God Virus: How God Infects Our Lives and Culture (2009) which highlights its opposition to religions and goes on to explain in the later book Sex and God: How Religion Distorts Sexuality (2012) in which makes clear his position on this quote:

“Religion has the ability to silence critical thinking and create blindness in whole groups of people. It can infect the minds of followers so completely as to allow the most serious sexual acts against children and others who remained unanswered for centuries “.
